During the years of 2015 and 2016, the total number of deaths resulting from motor vehicle accidents in the state of Georgia increased by more than a third. This is more than twice the growth of the natural average, according to a recent study.
Between the years of 2014 and 2016 a study from the National Safety Council has shown that the total fatalities in the state of Georgia increased by 34 percent. This represents the fifth highest jump – in the entire nation. During this same period, fatalities on a national scale increased by just 14 percent.
The Shocking Statistics Related to Car Accident Fatalities in Georgia
According to estimates from the council, over 1,540 people died in motor vehicle accidents in the state of Georgia in 2016. In the entire United States, 40,200 individuals passed away in these types of accidents. This is the first time since back in 2007 that the number of fatalities exceeded the 40,000 mark.
What’s Spurring On this Increase?
There has to be a reason that fatalities on the road are increasing by such significant numbers. According to the council, the two biggest factors that are causing this increase in accidents is more affordable gas prices and a recovering/improving economy. This situation has resulted in there being more people on the road. However, that isn’t the only factor in this equation.
According to experts, the top three killers of individuals on the road are still:
- Distracted driving
- Drinking and driving/alcohol
- Speeding
These are the same things that have killed people for decades – and they are still a problem and still robbing people of their lives.
Ways to Prevent More Fatalities
It’s up to officials and lawmakers in the state of Georgia to take a stand and implement methods and other factors that will help to prevent the occurrence of such high levels of fatalities. While this isn’t an easy task, nor does it have a signal answer, it is something that should be a top priority for those “in charge” at the state level.
