If you live in Atlanta, you have undoubtedly spent numerous hours of your life stuck in traffic. Atlanta has some long and stressful commutes and traffic along the I-75 and I-85 and commuters are often stuck in gridlock traffic for hours. However, according to a recent report by WalletHub, Georgia ranks 7th in America for best states to drive in.
The researchers compared every state in the U.S. across four categories:
- Cost of ownership and maintenance
- Traffic and infrastructure
- Safety
- Access to vehicles and maintenance
In those categories, individual measurements included gas prices, car theft rates, auto maintenance costs, rush hour traffic congestion and average commute times. Georgia ranked well in cost of ownership and maintenance (4th) and access to vehicles and maintenance (7th), but didn’t rank as well in traffic and infrastructure (30th) and safety (32th).
Here are the top 10 states for driving, according to the WalletHub report:
- Oregon
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Texas
- North Carolina
- Georgia
- Arkansas
- Nebraska
- Ohio
Are Georgia Drivers Bad?
Bad drivers cost the United States an estimated $305 billion in damages. While Georgia drivers aren’t the safest of drivers, drivers here aren’t the worst. A separate study by SmartAsset found that Georgia drivers ranked 18th worst in the country for safety. To determine this, they looked at the percentage of drivers with insurance, number of DUIs per driver, average number of deaths per miles driven, and traffic violations. According to the study, 88% of Georgia drivers had insurance, there were 1.27 deaths per miles driven, and there are 2.75 DUIs per driver in the state.
In order to avoid serious accidents and injuries, safety experts agree that all Georgia drivers should consider the following:
- Put the phone away
- Don’t drink and drive
- Avoid tailgating
- Drive slowly in bad weather
- Keep tires properly inflated
- Keep car maintained
- Obey posted speed limit signs
- Wear helmets when riding bicycle or motorcycle
- Only cross at designated pedestrian crosswalks
